Student advocates the power of citizenship

The Democratic Life campaign is building a strong support base all the time. It was great to have a passionate blog from a student at Swansea University fall into my inbox today heavily advocating the importance of citizenship education.

Zahid Raja highlighted the impact of the subject and went on to dispel the many myths that surround citizenship in schools;

“You may have heard sensationalised criticisms of citizenship education where many (Daily Mail readers) have suggested that it’s not ‘a serious subject’, or even that it’s a vehicle for New Labour. These accusations are incorrect; citizenship education contains elements of politics, philosophy and economics as well as law, ethics and sociology.  As young people, we’re often criticised for being too ‘politically apathetic’ – citizenship education is a positive mechanism of addressing that growing gap between the citizen, society and Parliament.”
