The Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, has written to all schools urging them to take part in his School Council Awards, designed to celebrate the achievements of students’ school councils.
The awards are given to projects, according to age categories, that have made a difference to relationships in school or with the wider community, that have helped the environment or that have improved democracy and engagement or learning and teaching. They are open to every infant, primary and secondary school, as well as student and learner colleges in the UK. Participating students can be aged anywhere from 4 to 19.
A panel of judges will choose the winners. They will be looking for projects which have excited the students and engaged them in making a real impact on their school or college.
Commenting on the awards Speaker Bercow said: “It is clear to me that young people often first experience democratic values and practices through their school councils. As Speaker of the House of Commons, the institution which sits at the heart of our democracy, I want to acknowledge this link by recognising and rewarding the achievements of school councils.”
